The low-energy cyclotrons have been widely applied for positron emission tomography (PET), which is an advanced method for early diagnostic of cancer. To promote research and talent cultivation, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has been developing a compact 10MeV cyclotron CYCHU-10, which could be used for short-life isotopes production. Automated successful operation of the CYCHU-10 cyclotron requires a stable, reliable and time proven control system. Further the operation data needs to be acquired, monitored and analyzed to optimize parameter setting and component design. This is done by using a combination of PLC based control system and a PCI based data acquisition system. The control system consists of two different Siemens PLC systems viz. (1) S-7 300 PLC as the Master Control, (2) S-7 1200 PLC as Vacuum system control. Communication between PLC and host PC adopts reliable Industrial Ethernet (IE). Control program and General User Interface (GUI) on host PC are developed in Siemens Step-7 PLC and LabVIEW, respectively. Open Process Control/Object Linking and Embedding [OLE] for Process Control (OPC) Server/Client architecture is used to share data between PLC control program and GUI. All signals coming from various sub-systems expect RF generator are connected to master PLC and vacuum control PLC. Signals from RF generator are connected and acquired by PCI for real-time monitoring. Control logic of general control system and vacuum, ion source, RF generator will be described in details. User interface of the control system will be presented.
